Our Program
Welcome to the KPC Health Transitional Year Residency Program at Hemet Global Medical Center (HGMC)! We are excited that you have chosen to learn about our program.
Our transitional year program allows physicians to develop essential clinical skills that serve as foundational training for their future careers. All residents in the transitional year program will work in collaboration with our categorical internal medicine, family medicine, and diagnostic radiology residency programs, complete with Endocrinology and Infectious Disease fellows and rotating medical students. Together with attending physicians, residents will manage some of the Inland Empire’s most underserved and ethnically diverse patient populations. Eighteen Transitional Year positions are offered through the National Resident Matching Program each year. Three Transitional Year positions are linked to the Diagnostic Radiology program.
Didactics
In collaboration with our Internal Medicine department, residents attend daily noon lectures and conferences. During this time, residents are excused from clinical duties to attend lectures. Once a month, multidisciplinary grand rounds are held and provide a forum for the presentation and active discussion of relevant case material. Attendees incorporate learned content into their practice and improve evidence-based care. Additionally, residents attend Morbidity and Mortality conferences, where a safe venue for identifying areas of improvement, promoting professionalism, and improving patient care is provided. The conference also serves as an avenue for teaching quality improvement curriculum.
On top of the regularly scheduled didactics, Transitional Year residents will have regular meetings amongst the residents to discuss any questions or concerns that arise. These meetings have been found to discuss updates specific to Transitional Year residents, build comradery amongst the Transitional Year residents and provide a safe space to share experiences.
Scholarly Activity
Scholarly activity is an integral part of the program, and residents complete at least one scholarly project during their Transitional Year residency. Residents have access to a number of projects already underway via the Internal Medicine program and are also encouraged to start their own research or quality improvement projects. Additionally, they may continue projects that they have previously started during medical school. Furthermore, all residents will have access to research mentorship from faculty advisors to help navigate the research process.
Our Hospital
Founded in 1943, Hemet Global Medical Center, is the only hospital in the Hemet-San Jacinto Valley, serving a population of approximately 160,000 people. The facility has grown to meet the health needs of this relatively rural and largely under-served population. With over 300 beds, and an incredibly busy Emergency Department, residents will find a plethora of patient care experiences embedded in a diverse training environment.
Rotations
The transitional year program at HGMC offers a wide breadth of training across internal medicine, emergency medicine, general surgery, medicine subspecialties, and a variety of elective rotations. The curriculum is tailored to meet all ACGME requirements for PGY-2 advancement in many different specialties such as anesthesiology, dermatology, diagnostic radiology, and ophthalmology.
Featured Rotation: Emergency Medicine
Hemet ED, where greater than 40,000 visits occur annually. Here residents will develop clinical skills in the setting of high acuity patients. Throughout the Emergency Medicine rotation, Transitional Year residents will have the opportunity to learn and become skilled in a variety of minor and major procedures including: laceration repairs, I&Ds, ABGs, venipuncture, paracentesis, thoracentesis, central venous line placement, intubation, POC ultrasound, and more. Residents also have access to a simulation lab to further hone their procedural skills.
